International Aircheck: Lessons from Elvis Duran

Elvis Duran Air Check

Elvis Duran is a legendary radio guy, and morning show host, but what makes him so special? In this International Aircheck: Lessons from Elvis, I review an hour of his show and surface some of his secrets.

His success is undeniable. He is fast approaching his 25th anniversary of hosting the Z100 Morning Show in New York; one of the most competitive radio markets in the world. He reportedly earns $6million a year from iHeart Media, and Premiere Networks syndicate his show into around 70 other markets.

So how has he stayed at the top so long, and what makes the show such a success?

I airchecked Elvis Duran and the Morning Show on Monday 1st February, 2021, 08:00-09:00 to find out. There was a lot of snow in New York, and most of the team were broadcasting from home:

    Great stuff, Francis.

I’m especially drawn to their unique positive outlook on life – it’s the fabric of the show and stands out a mile.

Their personality-led storytelling also tends to have universal hooks – always drawing me in right from the start by making it about me!

    Love this show.

Matt, I probably left out more than I included in this aircheck, there is so much that’s good about it. And I absolutely agree with your comments. Thanks.

Fascinating and insightful. The key word you use here is ‘effort’. The more effort a breakfast team puts into planning, preparation and production, the less of an effort it is for the listener to enjoy it.

Loved this International Air Check, I’m a big fan of many American presenters, I used to listen to Trey Morgan on Z100, admired how slick the guy was, Please do more of these Francis.

Baz – Here’s an interview I did with Trey for our students, great insight into his methods.
